The victim journalist said, on Saturday at around 8 am, I left for home from Cumilla General Hospital after receiving treatment. I crossed Panchpukuria Bazar in the upazila and waited for a rickshaw to the bridge. At that time, four people on two bikes came and blocked my way. They started abusing me in foul language and scolding me, asking why I had written a news story saying, "You can get drugs in Daudandi by raising your hand!" At one point, they grabbed my headscarf, threw me to the ground, beat me severely, and physically tortured me. They picked me up, raped me, threatened to disappear and kill me. At one point, they tried to throw me out and kill me, but I screamed. People gathered and rescued me and took me first to Chandina Maa Medical and later to Cumilla Medical College. Then those thugs ran away. Toni also said, for the past few days, I had been receiving calls from several unknown numbers. When I answered the phone, they would abuse me in foul language and threaten to kill me. Why was I writing against influential people and their illegal business of sand, dredgers and drugs? They kept pressuring me to delete the writing. At one point, I stopped receiving calls.
