Supreme Court Lawyer’s Chamber Attacked by ‘Mob’: Outrage Among Lawyers Nationwide, Storm of Protest on Social Media
Incidents of mob justice, harassment lawsuits, and physical assaults targeting lawyers, journalists, and human rights activists are rising at an alarming rate in the country. Most recently, Farzana Yeasmin, an advocate at the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, fell victim to this extreme insecurity.
In a recent social media post, she detailed the sudden attack and physical torture inside her chamber, demanding justice. As soon as the incident came to light, it sparked intense anger among netizens.
Chamber Attack and Physical Abuse
In a status update on social media, Advocate Farzana Yeasmin alleged, “Yesterday, I organized a program for the Bangladesh Awami League in court—under this baseless allegation, a sudden attack was carried out on my chamber.”
She further stated that the attackers physically assaulted her chamber members with slaps and punches. At the same time, using abusive language and threats, the miscreants attempted to forcibly close down her chamber. She has demanded legal action and a fair trial regarding the incident.
Fierce Outrage and Protest from Netizens
The lawyer’s post went viral within moments. Expressing anger through thousands of likes and comments, people from all walks of life protested against this injustice and the growing “mob culture.” In the comment section, over a thousand users wrote “strongly condemn and protest,” expressing deep concern over the breakdown of law and order and the safety of lawyers.
Rising Mob Violence and Deteriorating Law and Order
According to various human rights organizations and observers, insecurity among lawyers, journalists, and rights activists has reached a critical level in the country.
- Widespread Mob Violence: From schools and colleges to court premises, a section of miscreants is bypassing the legal process and taking the law into their own hands through organized mobs.
- Obstruction to Justice and Harassment: Freedom of expression and professional duties have become increasingly difficult to carry out. Fearing lawsuits and attacks, ordinary citizens lack the courage to speak the truth.
- Arbitrary and Phantom Lawsuits: Allegations have also surfaced against law enforcement agencies for filing controversial mass lawsuits, where names of deceased individuals or expatriates are not spared.
- Public Distress: Combined with the fear of mob justice, severe shortages of gas and electricity, soaring commodity prices, and an overall economic crisis have thrown public life into disarray.
Following this attack on a Supreme Court lawyer, conscious citizens and senior lawyers have demanded immediate action. They warned that if mob violence and attacks on professionals are not curbed with a strong hand, the country’s law and order and judicial system will collapse entirely.
