Ganja cultivation in Chandina had been ongoing for years under the guise of vegetable farming. Mohammad Liton, 40, a resident of Sreemontopur Dakshinpara village under Barkoit Union in Chandina upazila, Comilla, had been secretly growing cannabis while running a seemingly harmless scrap business.
On Thursday night (July 31), at around 9:30 PM, a joint team of the army and police raided his scrap shop in Jugpukuria village and arrested him red-handed.

Local sources confirmed that Liton grew cannabis plants alongside regular vegetables like spinach, jute mallow (pui shak), and okra. He cleverly used fruit crates as plant pots and harvested several kilos of cannabis leaves every two months from four cannabis plants.
According to Sub-Inspector Md. Imam Hossain of Chandina Police Station, “Liton had been cultivating cannabis for a long time, deceiving both the locals and law enforcement under the cover of vegetable farming.”
During the operation led by the army, law enforcers recovered sacks full of raw cannabis leaves from his premises. Liton was arrested on the spot and transferred to Chandina Police Station. A case under the Narcotics Control Act is currently being processed.
Authorities stated that stricter surveillance and enforcement will follow to prevent further ganja cultivation in Chandina.
