The arrest of an Awami Volunteer League leader in Cumilla has stirred political discussion following multiple cases filed over attacks on anti-discrimination student protests. On Saturday around 11 AM, police from the Kotbari outpost detained Abu Hanif from the Changni area of Kotbari Road in Cumilla city.
Abu Hanif is the former president of Ward 24 of the Awami Volunteer League’s city unit. He hails from the Rampur village of Kotbari and is the son of Abdul Halim.
According to police and local sources, Abu Hanif, along with party activists, was directly involved in several attacks on student protests held near the Kotbari highway area. Despite being accused in multiple cases, he had been roaming freely in the locality. Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Kotbari outpost in-charge Dilip Kumar Majumder apprehended him.
Mohammad Selim, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Cumilla Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station, confirmed that there are three cases filed at Sadar Dakshin Police Station and one at Kotwali Model Police Station against Awami Volunteer League leader Abu Hanif for his alleged involvement in the attacks during the protests.
Later in the day, he was presented before the court with a 7-day remand plea. The judge rejected his bail petition and ordered his transfer to jail.
