3,554 murders, 4,105 rapes, 819 abductions in 10 months—this alarming crime toll has cast a shadow of fear across Bangladesh. A front-page report by Bangladesh Pratidin revealed that between September 2024 and June 2025, the country recorded 3,554 murders, 12,726 cases of violence against women and children, 4,105 rapes, 819 abductions, and 97 riots. Additionally, 1,730 smuggling cases, 1,526 incidents of robbery, 610 dacoities, 38,176 drug-related crimes, and 7,310 thefts were documented during this period. In total, 144,955 cases were filed, including 898 fast-track trials.
Citing data from the Police Headquarters, the Press Wing of the Chief Adviser’s Office released a statement claiming that “major crime trends have remained stable over the past 10 months.” The statement addressed growing concerns triggered by media reports suggesting a sharp rise in crime, which has led to heightened public fear and anxiety.
A closer look at the statistics shows that from January to June 2025 alone, there were 1,933 murders, 2,744 rapes, 517 abductions, and 367 incidents of dacoity. In comparison, the full year of 2024 saw 4,114 murders, 4,394 rapes, 642 abductions, and 490 dacoities.
The press release emphasized that there is no indication of a rapid increase in serious crimes. “In reality, the rate of major crimes is either decreasing or remaining steady,” it stated. However, a slight upward trend has been noted in certain categories. Citizens are urged to remain cautious and place their trust in law enforcement, as the overall crime rate reportedly remains under control.
3,554 murders, 4,105 rapes, 819 abductions in 10 months—these are not just numbers but a harsh reflection of the country’s law and order situation. Despite the government’s assurance of stability, public perception suggests a growing sense of insecurity.
