An unusually narrow house in Daudkandi upazila of Cumilla has become a viral attraction after photos and videos of the structure spread across social media. Built on just one decimal of land, the house measures only five feet in width but stretches 85 feet in length, featuring all the essentials for family living.
The unique home was built by Saudi Arabia expatriate Md. Shahjalal, while his wife Khadija Akter currently lives there with their two daughters and one son. Despite its limited width, the house includes a bedroom, kitchen, storage space, bathroom, and a small open area.
According to Khadija Akter, the family was unable to build a conventional home due to prolonged land disputes and legal battles over their ancestral property. After purchasing a separate one-decimal plot in June this year with money sent by her husband from Saudi Arabia, they decided to construct the narrow house as a practical solution.
Local representatives said the plot’s unusually long and narrow shape left little option but to build a house of this design. Constructed at a cost of around BDT 250,000, it is now the family’s only permanent residence.
Residents say the family had spent years living in other people’s homes before finally securing a place of their own. Although compact, the house has provided them with stability and security. They also hope to expand it in the future if the ongoing land dispute with neighboring relatives is resolved.
The extraordinary design has sparked widespread curiosity online, turning the house into one of Daudkandi’s most talked-about attractions, with visitors arriving daily to see the remarkable structure.
