Kazi Faisal Bari Purna, Upazila Engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) in Muradnagar, Cumilla, has been receiving widespread public appreciation for his firm stance against corruption, irregularities and substandard construction work in government development projects.
A video showing him issuing stern warnings to contractors and taking a tough position against poor-quality construction has recently gone viral on social media, sparking considerable discussion and praise. Many people have welcomed his approach, saying that such accountability and uncompromising supervision are essential to ensure the proper use of public funds and sustainable infrastructure development.
Ensuring that government development projects are implemented according to approved designs, technical specifications and estimated costs is one of the key responsibilities of the engineering department. However, allegations of substandard construction materials, poor workmanship and irregularities frequently raise questions about the quality of public infrastructure.
In Muradnagar, Engineer Kazi Faisal Bari Purna has reportedly adopted a strict monitoring approach to address such concerns.
Recently, he inspected several ongoing development projects, including the Darikandi-Bhagolpur road. During the inspection, he reportedly noticed defective bricks and substandard construction materials being used. He subsequently instructed the concerned contractors to suspend the work and remove the inferior materials, directing them to use construction materials that meet the required standards.
In the video circulating on social media, Purna can be seen delivering a firm message to contractors, making it clear that he would not compromise on poor-quality work, irregularities or corruption during his tenure in Muradnagar. He emphasised that every development project funded by public money must meet the required engineering standards and follow the approved design and cost estimates.
This is not the first time he has taken action against alleged construction irregularities. Earlier, when allegations emerged that a major development project in the upazila had not followed the approved schedule and contained design-related defects, he reportedly ordered the defective portions to be demolished and reconstructed in accordance with the required standards.
His actions have served as a warning to contractors that substandard work would not be accepted without scrutiny.
Beyond construction quality, Purna has also drawn attention for maintaining professional conduct despite pressure from political figures and influential local groups.
In July 2025, he reportedly faced an incident involving inappropriate and aggressive behaviour by a political leader at his office. Despite the tense situation, he maintained his composure and exercised restraint, an approach that reportedly earned appreciation among government officials at the time.
Local residents say that Purna makes efforts to visit project sites personally when complaints arise concerning rural roads, culverts or construction-related public inconvenience. He also communicates with the relevant parties and provides necessary instructions to address reported problems.
Kazi Faisal Bari Purna said, “Maintaining the quality of government development projects is my responsibility. There will be no compromise when it comes to the misuse of public funds or substandard construction work. Regular monitoring will continue to ensure that every project is implemented in accordance with approved designs and cost estimates.”
Local freedom fighter Mohammad Abdul Matin Chowdhury also expressed satisfaction with the engineer’s work.
“I have personally observed the construction of the road in front of my house. I am fully satisfied with its quality and standard. This road is an example of what can be achieved when an engineer performs his responsibilities with sincerity and dedication. If officials like him continue serving in Muradnagar, development projects in the area will become more sustainable and beneficial to the people,” he said.
The Upazila Engineer plays a significant role in implementing rural roads, bridges, culverts and other infrastructure projects under the LGED. The department is responsible for monitoring the quality of construction materials, the volume of work, project deadlines and compliance with approved technical designs.
When defects or irregularities are not addressed during construction, local residents often suffer the consequences. Poorly constructed roads and infrastructure deteriorate prematurely, requiring additional public expenditure for repairs and reconstruction.
According to official records from the Muradnagar Upazila Engineer’s Office, Kazi Faisal Bari Purna joined as Upazila Engineer on February 11, 2025. Before his posting in Muradnagar, he served as Upazila Engineer in Kaliganj Upazila of Satkhira District.
His recent video has generated positive reactions among social media users, many of whom have described his approach as an example of responsible public service. They believe that strict field-level supervision, regardless of a contractor’s political connections or influence, can significantly reduce the misuse of public funds.
However, observers also stress that such efforts must be sustained through regular inspections, transparency, accountability and visible action against irregularities across all development projects.
Residents of Muradnagar hope that the engineer will maintain his firm position and ensure that all contractors are held to the same standards.
Public funds are not the private property of contractors or individuals; they are national resources. Every road, bridge and culvert built with taxpayers’ money is a public asset. Ensuring quality construction and preventing corruption are therefore essential not only for sustainable development but also for protecting the interests of ordinary citizens.
