Cumilla-Sylhet Regional Highway Repair 2025 is already under heavy scrutiny after brick soling along nearly 1,000 meters of the Debidwar section started falling apart even before the Tk 2.4 crore project reached completion. The road, under construction by Bhuiyan Construction for the Roads and Highways Department, has become riddled with potholes and sunken areas after light rainfall.
A visit to the site on Monday (July 13) revealed widespread damage. Without a proper drainage system, even slight rainwater causes the road to submerge. Vehicles get stuck in muddy pits, leading not only to accidents but also severe traffic jams. Pedestrians complain that their clothes get soiled due to splashes from the waterlogged road.

Truck driver Nayeb Ali said, “This road has been problematic for years. We risk our lives every day. The RHD sometimes fills potholes with bricks and rubble, but it never lasts.”
Local businessman Nazrul Islam said, “Shopkeepers are occupying RHD’s roadside land with construction materials and equipment, causing traffic chaos. The road’s narrow width also hampers pedestrian movement.”
CNG driver Amir Hossain added, “Crossing potholes on this road feels life-threatening. During heavy rain, they’re invisible, making it even more dangerous.”
Sub-divisional engineer of RHD, Md. Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan, told Kaler Kantho, “Heavy vehicles are damaging the soling. We’ve proposed a new project worth Tk 26 crore to replace the soling with bitumen and concrete, including a drainage system, from Mainamati to Debidwar.”
Debidwar UNO Md. Abul Hasnat Khan said, “We’ve spoken to the RHD executive engineer about public suffering caused by the potholes and road condition.”
