The Burichang mother-daughter suicide has shocked residents of Comilla. On Tuesday morning (July 29), police recovered the bodies of a woman and her teenage daughter from a rented house in Rampur village under Burichang upazila. Initial investigation suggests that both consumed poison late Monday night, possibly due to ongoing marital conflict and financial pressure.
The deceased have been identified as Zaheda Akhter (35) and her daughter Mishu Akhter (14). They were originally from Joynagar village of Chhagalnaiya upazila in Feni, but had been living in a rented house in Rampur, Burichang. Zaheda was the wife of Mir Hossain, a construction worker, who is currently absconding.
According to police and family sources, Mir Hossain had taken loans from various sources and failed to repay them. To escape creditors, he fled his original village with his family and started living in Burichang. However, the ongoing financial hardship and deteriorating marital relationship reportedly drove Zaheda and her daughter to take their own lives.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Azizul Haque of Burichang Police Station confirmed the incident. He stated that police visited the scene, prepared the inquest report, and sent the bodies to Comilla Medical College Hospital for autopsy. The Burichang mother-daughter suicide is believed to have resulted from poison ingestion, but further details will be confirmed once the postmortem report is received.
