The Daudkandi youth murder has triggered shock and fear across the Gouripur area of Cumilla. On Friday night (July 25), Md. Al-Mamun (32) was brutally hacked and beaten to death at the Gouripur bus stand shortly after getting off a Dhaka-bound passenger bus around 11:30 PM.
Mamun, a resident of Sholakandi village under Jiarakandi Union in Titas upazila, was the son of local figure Mokbul Member. According to police, he was accused in 23 cases involving murder, narcotics, extortion, and other crimes across Daudkandi, Titas, and surrounding areas.

Daudkandi Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Junaet Chowdhury said, “Mamun got down from the bus to buy water when 3-4 assailants suddenly attacked him with sharp weapons. He died on the spot. The attackers fled immediately after the incident.”
Police said Mamun had boarded the Cox’s Bazar-bound bus from Dhaka along with three women. When the bus stopped for a break at Gouripur, the attackers seized the opportunity and ambushed him.
Local sources claimed that the Daudkandi youth murder may have been premeditated. Mamun allegedly led a local drug and extortion syndicate in the Gouripur area, and had developed enmity with rival groups over territorial control and illicit trade.
Earlier this year, on the night of February 24, Mamun was arrested at a joint army-police checkpoint at Gouripur. Authorities seized 180 yaba pills and 30 liters of locally brewed liquor from his possession. He was later released on bail.
The murder has sparked fear in the area. Police have launched an investigation and are preparing to file a case. However, no suspects have been arrested at the time of writing this report.
The Daudkandi youth murder adds to growing concerns about rising criminal activity in Cumilla’s transport and trade zones.
