The Milestone Tragedy has claimed yet another young life—15-year-old Mahtab Rahman Bhuiyan from Debidwar. Severely burned in the tragic plane crash and resulting fire at the Milestone School and College campus in Diabari, Mahtab passed away this Thursday afternoon while undergoing treatment at the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute.
His death at 1:50 PM was confirmed by his uncle Md. Mizanur Rahman and maternal uncle Rakibul Islam. The grief-stricken family had been holding on to hope after Mahtab showed signs of life on Wednesday night, opening his eyes and breathing on his own. But his condition, with over 70% of his body burned, was critical. He had been on life support in ICU Bed 11 on the 4th floor.
Earlier on Tuesday night, another student, eight-year-old Nafi of the same school, died from his injuries. With Mahtab’s passing, the death toll at the Burn Institute now stands at 12.
Mahtab, the only son of Md. Minhajur Rahman Bhuiyan from Chulash Bhuiyan Bari in Rajamehar Union of Debidwar, Comilla, was a 7th-grade student in the English version stream of Milestone School and College. The family lived in Uttara, Dhaka, and his father is an AGM at Great Wall Ceramic.
Rakibul Islam, Mahtab’s uncle, told reporters, “We couldn’t save him. He passed away around 2:20 PM. I’m nearby and heading to the hospital. His burial and Janaza will be held this evening at his village home in Chulash.”
So far, 30 people have died in the tragic plane crash at Diabari. The authorities have identified and handed over 22 bodies to families, while 7 remain unidentified.
The Milestone Tragedy has left the nation in mourning. One by one, families are losing their loved ones to this horrific accident, and the demand for accountability and safety has never been louder.
