A tragic road accident on the ঢাকা–চট্টগ্রাম highway in Daudkandi upazila of Cumilla has claimed the lives of seven workers, leaving five others critically injured, according to doctors.
The accident occurred around 2:45 AM on Monday night (April 13) in the Hasanpur area. Police said a rice-laden truck traveling from Dinajpur to Noakhali lost control and plunged into a roadside ditch. All passengers onboard were seasonal agricultural workers engaged in paddy harvesting.
Seven workers died on the spot. The deceased have been identified as Abzal Hossain (35), Sohrab Hossain (40), Abu Saleh (42), Sumon Mia (21), Bishu Mia (34), Abu Hossain (29), and Abdur Rashid (58). All of them were residents of Dinajpur district.
The injured—Amir Ali, Tarikul Islam, Jalal Hossain, Md. Aminul Islam, and Jahangir Alam—were first taken to Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex. Due to deterioration in their condition, they were later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Officer-in-Charge of Daudkandi Highway Police Station, Mohammad Iqbal Bahar Majumder, said the bodies have been recovered and kept at the police station, and legal procedures are underway.
Meanwhile, Dr. Nayan Dey of Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex stated that the condition of the injured remains extremely critical.
The tragic incident has cast a pall of grief over the area, sparking sorrow and concern among locals over the recurring dangers on the highway.
