CID Impersonation in Chandina: Expat Abducted, Gold and iPhones Looted
In a shocking case of CID impersonation in Chandina, a group of criminals abducted a recently returned expatriate from his in-laws’ house in broad daylight, looting nearly 9 vori (approximately 105 grams) of gold jewelry and two smartphones including an iPhone. The victim’s wife was later contacted by the abductors, demanding a ransom of BDT 2 lakh. Within hours, five suspects including a local political leader were arrested in a joint army-police operation.
Five Arrested Including Labor Party Leader
On Sunday (July 13), the gang allegedly posed as CID officers to gain entry into the house of Mohammad Sohel Sarkar, who had returned from Malaysia just two days earlier. The abduction took place around 1:30 PM in the Shaikot area of Chandina. The criminals, claiming to have information about illegal possessions, forcibly took Sohel along with the valuables.
By late evening, a joint operation by the army and police led to Sohel’s rescue near the Katherpul area on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway. Two suspects were arrested on the spot, while three others were detained in follow-up raids. A case was filed that night at Chandina Police Station.

Identities of the Arrestees
The arrested individuals are:
- Sohel Munshi (39) – Joint Convenor of Chandina Municipality Labor Party and President of Ward No. 1 Labor Party, son of late Aziz Munshi from Maharang Munshibari.
- Sohag Ahmed (35) – Son of late Abdul Latif Sheikh from Malapdiya, Sirajdikhan, Munshiganj.
- Russel Mia (29) – Son of Chan Mia from Haria village, Mirzapur, Tangail.
- Hanif (27) – Son of Liakat Ali from Bir Char Madhua, Raipura, Narsingdi.
- Faisal (27) – Son of Ismail from Shrimontopur, Chandina, Cumilla.
Police recovered most of the looted items, including gold jewelry and mobile phones.
Victim’s Statement
Sohel Sarkar, hailing from South Bottoli, Raipura, Narsingdi, had come to visit his in-laws at Shaikot, Chandina. He stated that the kidnappers forcefully took him and his belongings while accusing him of possessing illegal items. They transported him to a remote location and called his wife for ransom. She reported the matter to the army camp in Chandina, which initiated the rescue.
Police Action and Legal Procedure
Chandina Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jabedul Islam confirmed that the army handed over the two initial suspects, and police arrested three more. All five were produced in court on Monday and sent to jail.
CID impersonation in Chandina has raised serious concerns about rising organized crimes disguised as law enforcement. Authorities are continuing their investigation to identify any remaining members of the gang.
