A tragic boat disaster has once again struck near the Italian coast, as a migrant vessel traveling from Libya to Europe capsized, leaving dozens missing. Reports indicate that the small boat was carrying around 105 people, with at least 71 feared missing in the Mediterranean Sea.
According to international media, survivors described the حادثة as one of the deadliest this year. Rescue teams managed to save 32 people alive, while two bodies have been recovered so far.
The rescued individuals reported that the passengers included nationals from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Egypt. They were transferred to an Italian coast guard patrol vessel and later taken to Lampedusa island for further assistance.
Nearby commercial ships also joined the rescue efforts, helping recover survivors and bodies from the sea. Aid organizations including Mediterranea Saving Humans and Sea-Watch described the situation as extremely critical.
Bangladeshi journalist Lakmina Jesmin Soma, known for sharing reliable migration-related information, also expressed concern in a verified Facebook post. She wrote, “Once again, a boat carrying over a hundred passengers has sunk off the Libyan coast on the way to Europe. After the حادثة, 32 people including Bangladeshis were rescued alive, two bodies were recovered, and at least 70 migrants remain missing.”
Survivors said many passengers fell into the sea as the boat capsized and cried out for help. A video released by rescuers showed several people clinging to an overturned orange boat, highlighting the severity of the tragedy.
Italian authorities, including the Interior Ministry and Coast Guard, have not issued any immediate official statements. The incident occurred on Easter Sunday, one of Italy’s major religious holidays, which may have delayed responses.
Experts warn that worsening weather conditions in the Mediterranean have made migration routes increasingly dangerous. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), at least 683 migrants have died in the central Mediterranean so far this year, marking one of the highest death tolls since 2014.
