Jamaat Rally at Suhrawardy Udyan 2025 has sparked outrage from the Bangladesh Student Union, who condemned the government for allowing a known war criminal organization to hold a rally at the historic ground of national victory.
In a statement issued Saturday (July 19), central leaders Mahir Shahriar Reza and Bahauddin Shuvo said that since taking office on August 8, the interim government has consistently demonstrated an anti-Liberation stance. Despite the destruction of war memorials across the country, the government has remained passive.
The statement noted, “Suhrawardy Udyan is a sacred place of victory where the Pakistani occupation forces and their local collaborators — including Jamaat-e-Islami, Al-Badr, Al-Shams — surrendered on December 16, 1971. Allowing Jamaat to rally here is an insult to history.”

The leaders further alleged that the government is attempting to distort the history of the Liberation War through changes in textbooks and redefining the identity of freedom fighters, even labeling them as ‘fallen allies of the Awami League dictatorship.’
Jamaat Rally at Suhrawardy Udyan 2025 is being seen as part of a broader assault on the spirit of Bangladesh’s independence, and the Student Union vowed that the people, especially the youth, will resist such attempts.
