Seven Bangladeshis were killed and six others injured in a road accident in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday. All 13 victims were members of three families from Cox’s Bazar district in Bangladesh.
The accident occurred in the Al-Himna area as the group was travelling back to Jeddah from Medina, according to a report sent to Dhaka by the Bangladesh Consulate in Jeddah.
The consulate identified four of the deceased as Ziaur Rahman, his two sons Yasir and Yazan, and his daughter Bushra. Ziaur Rahman’s wife, Shakira, and another daughter, Yusra, were injured and are receiving treatment at a hospital.
Another passenger, Alam Shah, lost his wife, Sanjida, and daughter, Faria, in the crash. Alam Shah and his son Faisal were injured. Elias, another injured passenger, lost his wife, Afsana Bibi. The sixth injured person was identified as Gafur Alam.
According to the consulate’s report, four members of the families, including the heads of three households, were employed by Al-Abir Company in Saudi Arabia. Mohammad Salman, manager of the company’s Makkah branch, told consulate officials that the vehicle was carrying 13 people, including four Bangladeshi employees and their family members.
The vehicle was reportedly travelling at an estimated speed of 160 kilometres per hour at the time of the accident. The traffic department’s preliminary assessment suggests that excessive speed caused the driver to lose control, resulting in the vehicle overturning. However, the exact cause will be established after the relevant authorities complete their investigation and issue a final report.
