Police recovered the body of Adnan Altaf, a 28-year-old Indian medical student, from a waterbody in Burichang upazila of Cumilla on Wednesday morning, two days after he went missing.
The body was found near the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway, approximately 400 to 500 yards from the campus of Eastern Medical College.
Adnan was a resident of Bunpara Dangolpara in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. He was the son of Altaf Hossain Rather and a student at Eastern Medical College, located in the Kabila area of Burichang.
According to police and college authorities, Adnan left the college campus at 11:36pm on Monday, November 2, and went to a nearby Indian restaurant. He could no longer be contacted after 12:05am.
His family subsequently circulated notices on social media seeking information about his whereabouts and filed a general diary (GD) with Burichang Police Station.
After receiving the missing report, police and college authorities searched several locations to trace him. On Wednesday morning, police went to the scene after local residents reported seeing a body in a nearby waterbody and recovered it.
Eastern Medical College Chairman Shah Md Selim said Adnan had been experiencing some mental health difficulties. Considering his physical and mental condition, the college had made special arrangements for him to stay on campus with his mother.
Burichang Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Lutfor Rahman said police had been searching for the student since the GD was filed following his disappearance.
Acting on information provided by local residents on Wednesday morning, police recovered his body from the waterbody, he added.
The OC further said the body had been sent to the morgue of Cumilla Medical College Hospital for an autopsy. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, and further details are expected after the post-mortem report is received.
