Sagar-Runi Murder Case No Progress in Investigation; New Controversy Over Burnt Documents

By Mohammad Shariful Alam Chowdhury, Special Correspondent:

Thirteen years have passed since the brutal murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, yet justice remains elusive. The investigation has long been stagnant, and now the case is embroiled in a new controversy—this time over allegations of destroyed case documents.

According to the prosecution, some crucial documents were damaged in a fire at the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) office on August 5, 2024. However, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), which is handling the case, has denied this claim. The PBI insists that the main documents are safe in their possession and that the investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, the High Court has removed the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from the investigation and formed a four-member task force led by the PBI chief. This task force also includes representatives from the CID, police, and RAB. On April 22, the High Court granted the team an additional six months to complete the investigation.

Despite these developments, the victims’ family and the general public continue to question why the investigation has taken so long. To date, the submission of the investigation report has been delayed 117 times, yet no charge sheet has been filed.

It is worth recalling that on February 11, 2012, the journalist couple was brutally murdered in their apartment in Dhaka’s West Rajabazar. Their then-teenage son, Mahir Sarowar Megh, is now a young man who still doesn’t know who killed his parents.

Legal analysts warn that if the documents were indeed destroyed, it could cast even more uncertainty over the future of the case.
