Pham Doan Trang, a prominent writer and co-founder of Luat Khoa Magazine and The Vietnamese Magazine, was arrested in 2020 after publishing a report on a deadly police raid. She was later sentenced to nine years in prison for allegedly spreading “anti-state propaganda.”
Her health has severely deteriorated in prison. She suffers from long-term effects of COVID-19, chronic sinusitis, arthritis, and gynecological issues. Despite her condition, she is being denied proper medical treatment and legal access.
Trang’s case has become a symbol of Vietnam’s growing repression of independent journalism. According to the 2025 RSF World Press Freedom Index, Vietnam ranks 173rd out of 180 countries. PEN America's 2024 Freedom to Write Index lists Vietnam as the third-worst jailer of writers globally.
"Trang’s courage and journalism represent the struggle for freedom in Vietnam,” said RSF’s Aleksandra Bielakowska. “She must be released immediately.”
"Her writings continue to inspire even behind bars," added Quynh-Vi Tran of LIV. "Prison is no place for her."
Global advocates demand her release, proper medical care, access to a lawyer of her choice, and an end to state repression of journalists in Vietnam.
