Yunus Considering Resignation, Says Nahid Islam

By Dainik Joy Banglar Joy : Professor Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh's interim government, may resign from his post, according to Nahid Islam, Convenor of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP).

Mr. Islam confirmed to the media that he met Professor Yunus on Thursday evening at the state guest house Jamuna, where the Chief Adviser resides.

Speaking to BBC Bangla, Mr. Islam said, “Given the ongoing situation in the country, there have been rumors about his possible resignation since this morning. I went to speak with him regarding the matter.”

He added that Professor Yunus has expressed concern about whether he will be able to continue working under the current political circumstances.

“He said, ‘If I can't do my job... you brought me here after a mass uprising with hopes of change and reform. But given the current movements and the way I’m being cornered—I can’t work like this.’”

According to Mr. Islam, Professor Yunus also mentioned that unless political parties can reach a common understanding, it will be difficult for him to continue in his role.

Mr. Islam urged the Chief Adviser not to step down, highlighting the importance of national unity and the aspirations of the July uprising that led to the formation of the interim administration. “We want him to stay strong, unite all parties, and continue his leadership,” he said.

However, he acknowledged Yunus’s concern, quoting him as saying, “If I can’t perform my duties, then what’s the point of staying?”

Mr. Islam concluded that Yunus is indeed contemplating resignation. “He told me he is thinking about it seriously. He feels the situation may not allow him to function effectively.”

The remarks come on the same day the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) demanded the resignation or removal of two government advisers and the National Security Adviser. The demand was made during ongoing protests over the oath-taking of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation.

At a press conference, BNP called for the dismissal of Advisers Mahfuz Alam and Asif Mahmud, as well as National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman.

In response, a senior NCP leader warned that unless reform proposals are implemented, three other advisers—Law Adviser Professor Asif Nazrul, Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed, and Planning Adviser Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud—may also be forced to resign, branding them as “BNP spokespersons.”

Meanwhile, Information Adviser Mahfuz Alam posted on Facebook Thursday, expressing regret over any past divisive remarks or language he may have used.
