By Mohammad Shariful Alam Chowdhury : A professor at Cumilla Victoria Government College has been made an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) following a controversial Facebook post about the Palestinian group Hamas. The Ministry of Education issued the order on May 25, 2025, transferring Professor Meherunnesa of the Botany Department to Gauripur Government College in Mymensingh until further notice.
The controversy began on April 6, when Professor Meherunnesa shared a personal opinion on her Facebook profile amid Israeli attacks on Gaza. In her post, she wrote:
“Blaming Israel for what’s happening in Gaza is secondary. The real reason lies in Hamas’ rigid, reactionary, and one-track politics.”
The post quickly drew backlash from students, who circulated a screenshot of it on social media and launched protests. Many students expressed anger and declared a boycott of her classes, accusing her of being insensitive to the Palestinian cause.
In response to the growing protest, the professor deleted the post, locked her Facebook profile, and issued a public apology on April 7.
Despite the apology, the Ministry moved ahead with administrative action, placing her on OSD status — a bureaucratic designation often used to sideline officials from active duty.
The incident has sparked fresh debate over freedom of expression in academic spaces. Rights activists and educators have expressed concern over punitive measures taken against personal opinions shared on private social media accounts.
As of now, the college administration has not issued any official statement regarding the matter.
