Man Sentenced to Death for Killing Mother and Sister-in-law in Cumilla

Mohammad Shariful Alam Chowdhury : A court in Cumilla has sentenced Saedur Rahman Siki, 37, to death for the brutal murder of his mother, Nurjahan Begum (70), and sister-in-law, Nurunnahar Begum Pushpa (45), in 2021. The verdict was announced on Tuesday (May 27) by Judge Mohammad Saedur Rahman of the Public Safety Disruption Crimes Tribunal.

The killings took place in the village of Pujkara in Nangalkot upazila following a quarrel over breakfast. Siki attacked his mother and sister-in-law with a kitchen knife and also injured his niece, Arju Akter (28), when she tried to intervene.

The case was filed by his elder brother, Azizul Haque. After four years of legal proceedings, including 11 witness statements and the accused’s confession, the court delivered the capital punishment.

Prosecutor Md. Yusuf Ali called the verdict a landmark decision against brutality and a step towards justice in society.
