"Saying It Abroad Could Be Risky": Dr. Yunus on Resignation

By Mohammad Shariful Alam Chowdhury : Speculation has been growing in recent weeks about the possible resignation of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to Bangladesh’s interim government. The rumor gained traction after Nahid Islam, a former interim government advisor and now convener of the newly formed National Citizens' Party (NCP), publicly suggested that Yunus might step down.

Japanese news outlet Nikkei Asia asked Dr. Yunus about the matter during his ongoing visit to Japan. In response, Yunus cautiously stated, “I didn’t answer this question even in Bangladesh. Since I haven’t said anything there, saying something here [in Japan] could create a lot of problems for me.”

Nikkei reported that last week, Dr. Yunus allegedly told a student leader that he might consider resigning if the political parties fail to agree on reforms and an election timeline. However, when asked directly, Yunus avoided confirming the remark, instead pointing to the risks of making such a statement abroad.

Beyond the resignation issue, Dr. Yunus made serious allegations about financial crimes during the tenure of the ousted government led by Sheikh Hasina. He claimed that around $234 billion was laundered out of Bangladesh during that time. Additionally, he said that $11–12 billion has already been identified and frozen within the country.

Yunus stated that if these funds are successfully recovered, the current administration intends to establish two sovereign wealth funds. The money would be used for education and healthcare, with the goal of transforming the lives of the poor and helping young people become entrepreneurs.
