"We observe World Press Freedom Day in a country where journalists lose their jobs for asking questions"

By Mohammad Shariful Alam Chowdhury:

"In a country where journalists lose their jobs simply for asking questions, we are ironically observing World Press Freedom Day," said Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, Editor-in-Chief of Manabzamin.

He made this remark on Sunday, May 4, at a discussion organized by the Editors’ Council in observance of World Press Freedom Day 2025.

The event, held at the National Press Club, was presided over by Mahfuz Anam, President of the Editors’ Council and Editor of The Daily Star. Dewan Hanif Mahmud, Secretary General of the Council and Editor of Bonik Barta, moderated the session.

Matiur Rahman Chowdhury said, “Democracy cannot thrive without a free press. We must be allowed to speak, to write, and to ask questions. Only then will we truly experience the freedom of the media.”

Other notable speakers included BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Citizens' Unity President Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Editors’ Council Vice-President and New Age Editor Nurul Kabir, Ganosamhati Andolan’s Chief Coordinator Zonayed Saki, and National Citizens' Party Convenor Nahid Islam.

The speakers discussed the current state of the media in Bangladesh, freedom of the press, and the broader issues surrounding freedom of expression.
