Amnesty International has called for the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a highly respected pediatrician and Director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in North Gaza, who was arbitrarily detained by Israeli forces on December 27, 2024.
According to Amnesty, Dr. Abu Safiya was providing critical care to children and civilians despite relentless Israeli airstrikes and the death of his own son. He became a vital voice in documenting the crumbling healthcare system in northern Gaza following the siege imposed since October 6, 2024.

A lawyer visiting Ofer military prison in July 2025 reported that Dr. Hussam and other detainees have suffered physical assault, beatings, and severe weight loss due to inhumane prison conditions, including lack of food and medical care.
Human rights advocates state that the targeting of health workers like Dr. Abu Safiya is part of a broader strategy to dismantle Gaza’s healthcare system and inflict collective punishment on Palestinians.
Amnesty International is urging people worldwide to join their petition demanding Dr. Hussam’s release and end to arbitrary detention of Palestinian medical professionals.
“Dr. Hussam’s arrest is a violation of international law and medical neutrality. We must raise our voices for his freedom,” said Amnesty’s regional team.
The campaign highlights growing international concern over Israel’s actions against healthcare workers and calls for global solidarity in the fight for justice and accountability.
