A young and outspoken journalist was brutally beaten to death by assailants after being lured out of his home in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria on Tuesday afternoon (March 24).
The deceased journalist has been identified as Din Islam, son of Shafiqul Islam from the Middle Para area of Shimrail village in Kasba.
Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Kasba Police Station, Nazneen Sultana, said that the identities of the attackers are still unknown. However, police have launched an investigation to uncover the motive behind the killing.
The shocking murder has sparked outrage among journalists across the country. The central committee of the Bangladesh Mofossol Journalists Forum (BMSF), including President Ahmed Abu Zafar and General Secretary Lion Md. Abul Hossain, expressed deep grief and concern, demanding the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible.
The leaders stated that such a brutal killing of a journalist is unacceptable and has raised serious concerns within the country’s media community. They called for swift justice.
According to a statement, a review of Din Islam’s online platform shows that he had long been vocal against drug-related activities and did not spare anyone involved. This stance reportedly led to tensions with local administration and certain journalists.
Due to security concerns, Din Islam had been living in a rented house in Cumilla city for some time. He returned home to spend time with his family during Eid, when the fatal attack occurred.
BMSF leaders believe that arresting individuals who had prior enmity with the journalist could help uncover the real motive behind the murder.
