Eight journalists including Asian TV’s Nesar Uddin came under a terrorist attack in Debidwar, Cumilla, on Thursday afternoon (October 2). At least 12 people were injured in the incident. Attackers snatched mobile phones, cameras, and cash from the journalists.
The injured journalists are—Parvez Sarkar (Dainik Dinkal), Nesar Uddin (Asian TV), Sohrab Hossain (Ajker Cumilla), Md. Anwar Hossain (Dainik Dak Protidin), Abu Bakkar Siddique (Amar Desh), Jahirul Islam Maruf (Dainik Kalbela), Md. Shahjalal (Dainik Bhorer Darpan), and Saiful Islam Sojib (ATN MCL News).
The incident originated from a long-standing land dispute between the family of late Abdul Khalek Fakir, custodian of Utkhara Mazar, and their neighbors led by Shahjahan. While the journalists were gathering information at a tea stall near the arbitration venue, 25–30 men led by Shahjahan suddenly attacked them.
Several journalists were severely beaten and their equipment looted. Nesar Uddin, in critical condition, was transferred to Cumilla Medical College Hospital.
Debidwar police inspector (Investigation) Md. Mainuddin said, “Police visited the scene and hospital. Legal action will be taken upon receiving a written complaint.”
This terrorist attack on 8 journalists including Nesar in Debidwar has sparked outrage among the journalist community.
