Alhaj Md. Lutfur Rahman, a businessman and social worker from Kaziatal village in Darora Union of Muradnagar Upazila, Cumilla, has participated in the internationally renowned Canton Fair held in Guangzhou, China. His participation in the major international trade event has added new experience to his business activities. At the same time, his potential candidacy for the chairman post in the upcoming Darora Union Parishad election, under Ward 19 of Muradnagar Upazila, has become a topic of discussion among local residents.

Officially known as the China Import and Export Fair, the Canton Fair is one of the world’s major platforms for international trade, import-export activities and business networking. Rahman attended the event with the aim of exploring international markets, identifying opportunities for importing products and expanding his business operations. During the fair, he was seen wearing an official entry badge with a lanyard bearing the words “Global Share.”
According to sources close to him, Rahman hopes to apply the international business exposure he gained at the fair, alongside his long experience as an expatriate businessman, to future business initiatives and development activities in his hometown.
Born in 1983 in Kaziatal village of Muradnagar Upazila, Lutfur Rahman is the eldest among two brothers and three sisters. He is the son of Alhaj Md. Abdul Khalek and Ambia Khatun. He received his education at Kaziatal Borobari Islamia Dakhil Madrasa, Faizul Ulum Islamia Hafezia Madrasa and Muradnagar Bor Madrasa. In 1997, he moved to Saudi Arabia, where he gradually established his business through years of hard work. He currently operates a company named “Saudi Building Maintenance.”
Rahman’s family also has a connection with local public representation. His younger brother, the late Habibur Rahman Habu, was elected as a member of Ward No. 9 of Darora Union in 2011. He was re-elected by a significant margin in the 2022 election. Following his death last year, no by-election has yet been held for the ward, according to local residents.
Alongside running his business abroad, Rahman says he has also contributed to creating overseas employment opportunities for people from Bangladesh. According to him, more than 8,000 people have secured employment abroad through his initiatives and assistance. He has also been involved in supporting the development of educational institutions, mosques, madrasas and Eidgahs in Kaziatal and other parts of Darora Union, as well as various social and humanitarian activities.
Md. Jamal Hossain, a social worker from Ward No. 8 of Kaziatal, said, “Although Alhaj Md. Lutfur Rahman has spent many years abroad, he has maintained his connection with and support for the people of his locality. He has contributed to employment generation, educational institutions, mosques, madrasas and various social initiatives. His willingness to work for the community and his experience have generated discussion among local residents.”
Speaking about the possibility of contesting the chairman election, Alhaj Md. Lutfur Rahman said, “Through travelling to different countries and conducting business internationally, I have had the opportunity to learn about modern social systems and development initiatives. I want to expand my efforts to serve people and remain beside them. My vision is to transform Kaziatal and the entire Darora Union into a modern, self-reliant and discrimination-free model union. I seek the cooperation and prayers of people from all walks of life, regardless of their political affiliations, to turn this vision into reality.”
Rahman’s long experience as an expatriate businessman, his involvement in employment generation and his contributions to local social initiatives have brought him into discussion as a potential chairman candidate in Darora Union. However, his participation in the election will depend on his formal announcement and the subsequent electoral process.
