Woman tied to tree and tortured in Palashbari — this shocking incident has sparked outrage across Bangladesh after a disturbing video went viral on Facebook. The video shows a woman tied to the base of a mango tree with visible signs of physical abuse. Her hair was cut from the middle, her clothes were torn, and her face bore marks of violence. A garland made of shoes hung around her neck.
The incident occurred in the Harinabari area of Palashbari upazila, Gaibandha district. The victim, in tears, stated that on Sunday afternoon she was assaulted and tortured by local influential figure Yunus Mia and his men. “They tied me to the tree, beat me with sticks, cut my hair, put a shoe garland on me, and vandalized my house,” she said.
She also claimed that her cattle-sale money was stolen and her home was ransacked. “They won’t let me live here anymore. They want my land,” the woman added. Since filing a complaint at Harinabari Police Investigation Center, she has received threats not to pursue legal action.
Locals revealed that the woman had gone to her elder sister’s in-laws’ house in a nearby village to make clothes. Upon returning, Yunus Mia’s group accused her of having an affair and began assaulting her. Tied to the tree for over two hours, she was beaten with sticks and bamboo rods, humiliated with face paint, stripped partially, and left unconscious. A local UP member, Asaduzzaman Majnu, later untied her and took her to the hospital.
When journalists visited Yunus Mia’s house to hear his side, he refused to speak. Instead, his men filmed the reporters and tried to intimidate them.
Sub-Inspector Sabuzar Ali of Harinabari Investigation Center confirmed, “Preliminary investigation shows the woman was indeed tortured. She’s been advised to file a formal case.”
