Gopalganj Civilian Killings 2025 has ignited public outrage after a respected freedom fighter and former military officer, Abdul Matin Chowdhury, criticized the role of the army and police in the deadly violence on July 16.

He expressed horror at the brutality, where civilians were reportedly beaten, dragged, and burned to death. “Under whose command did this happen? Why is the army now entangled in politically charged repression?” he questioned.

Matin acknowledged that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had significantly uplifted the armed forces—modern gear, improved rations, and better living conditions. “Despite this, today our military’s image is being questioned because of political misuse,” he lamented.
