Veteran journalist and human rights activist Pulok Ghatak has raised serious concerns over alleged attempts to push hundreds of people into Bangladesh through various Indian border checkposts. He also questioned the “mysterious silence” of Bangladesh’s mainstream media regarding the issue.
In a Facebook post published on Tuesday from his verified account, Pulok Ghatak expressed concern over the developing situation along the border.
He wrote, “Hundreds of people have reportedly been gathered at some Indian border checkposts to send them back to Bangladesh. Is this a pushback? Is Bangladesh accepting them willingly? What exactly is happening?”
According to him, while Bangladeshi media outlets remain silent on the issue, several West Bengal-based media platforms have already published reports and videos related to the matter. Videos of people allegedly waiting near the border have also gone viral on social media.
Questioning the role of local media, he added, “There is no news about this in Bangladeshi media… but everyone here remains silent!”
Following his statement, the issue quickly sparked debate across social media platforms. Many users questioned the role of India’s border forces as well as the position of the Bangladeshi government regarding the alleged pushback attempts.
So far, there has been no official statement from the Bangladeshi government confirming whether any pushback operation is actually taking place or whether the people gathered near the border are Bangladeshi citizens.
Observers believe that the government and border authorities should provide a clear explanation quickly to ease growing public concern over national security and border management.
