Prince George, second in line to the British throne, is embarking on a significant new phase of his life as he celebrates his 13th birthday today, July 22, 2026, and prepares to join the prestigious Eton College this September. This milestone marks not only his transition into adolescence but also a pivotal step in his education, aligning him with generations of prominent figures, including his father and uncle, who have passed through the hallowed halls of the elite boarding school.

The decision for Prince George to attend Eton College has been widely anticipated and represents a continuation of a modern royal tradition established by his parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales. Eton, renowned for its academic excellence, rigorous curriculum, and a student body drawn from global elites, will provide a unique environment for the young prince’s secondary education. Located near Windsor Castle, its proximity to the Royal Family’s residences allows for a balance between traditional boarding school life and maintaining family connections, a key consideration for his parents who have often emphasized a desire for their children to experience as normal an upbringing as possible within their royal context.

Founded in 1440 by King Henry VI, Eton College boasts an illustrious history and a long list of distinguished alumni, including 20 British Prime Ministers, numerous global leaders, artists, and scientists. For a future monarch, attendance at such an institution is often seen as foundational, not just for academic grounding but also for developing leadership skills, networking within influential circles, and cultivating a sense of duty and responsibility that will be crucial for his future role. The school’s emphasis on character development, sports, and a wide array of extracurricular activities is expected to provide Prince George with a well-rounded education.

His entry into Eton follows in the footsteps of his father, Prince William, and uncle, Prince Harry, both of whom attended the school. While the experience may offer some familiarity, the landscape of royal life and education has evolved. Prince William’s time at Eton was marked by a similar balance between public interest and private development, lessons that his parents will undoubtedly draw upon as they guide Prince George through these formative years. The focus will remain on allowing him to mature as an individual, acquiring the necessary skills and confidence for his eventual responsibilities, while also safeguarding his privacy as much as possible.

Turning 13 brings with it an increased level of public awareness and a gradual, albeit controlled, introduction to more formal aspects of royal life. While his immediate focus will be on his studies and adapting to a new school environment, this period will also subtly lay the groundwork for his future engagements and duties. The public, and indeed the monarchy, will watch with interest as Prince George navigates these significant transitions, representing the continuity and future of the British Royal Family. His education at Eton is a strategic choice, designed to equip him for the unique demands and expectations that await the second in line to the throne.
