Attempted Murder Case Filed Against 26 Journalists in Chattogram: CUJ Expresses Deep Concern

By Mohammad Shariful Alam Chowdhury : A total of 37 individuals, including 26 journalists, have been accused in an attempted murder case filed in Chattogram. The case also names 70 to 80 unidentified persons as suspects.

Pro-BNP lawyer Rezaul Islam filed the case on Tuesday with the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Bakar Siddique. The court has directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to conduct a probe and submit a report.

Among the accused journalists are Chattogram Union of Journalists (CUJ) President Riyad Haider Chowdhury, General Secretary Sabur Shuvo, Joint Secretary Omar Faruk, Samakal reporter Abdullah Al Mamun, Amader Shomoy Chattogram bureau chief Hamid Ullah, Channel 24 reporter Roni Dutta and cameraman Shafik Ahmed Sajib, Jugantor bureau chief Shahidullah Shahriar, photojournalist Rajesh Chakraborty, Prothom Alo photojournalist Jewel Shil, Kalbela bureau chief Saidul Islam, Jaijaidin reporter Khoshhed Alam Shamim, Dainik Azadi reporter Shuklal Das, NewsNow journalist Partha Pratim Nandi, Chattogram Protidin editor Hossain Tawfiq Iftekhar, BDnews24.com reporter Uttam Sen Gupta, Dhaka Post reporter Mizanur Rahman Mizan, Purbodesh sub-editor Shafiqul Islam, and others including Pradip Shil, Ujjal Kanti Dhar, Kamal Das, Ranjit Kumar Shil, Bishu Roy Chowdhury, Rahul Roy Chowdhury, Rahul Das, and Ranjit Kumar Shil. Eleven other accused have been labeled as "Awami terrorists" in the complaint.

The complainant identified himself as an active member of the BNP-affiliated Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum (Chattogram unit), United Lawyers’ Front, and the BNP’s legal committee in Chattogram North district. He also claimed to be a former member of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.

Rezaul Islam alleged that the accused are affiliated with the ruling Awami League, Jubo League, and its associate bodies. He claimed they attacked him near Jamiatul Falah Mosque on May Day while he was on his way to attend a labor wing event. According to the complaint, the attack was carried out because of his support for protestors during last July's anti-government demonstrations.

The complaint further alleges that the attackers attempted to strangle him, snatched Tk 30,000 from him, and threw crude bombs that caused injury to one of his eyes. He reportedly sought refuge with a nearby police patrol team and was later hospitalized.

Despite several attempts, Rezaul’s lawyer Imtiaz Reza Chowdhury could not be reached for comment. When contacted, Rezaul Islam declined to comment, citing his busy schedule.

President of the Chattogram District Bar Association, Abdus Sattar, said he was unaware of any such case against journalists but confirmed that Rezaul is affiliated with the BNP.

In a joint statement, CUJ President Riyad Haider and General Secretary Sabur Shuvo said Rezaul had threatened via a Facebook post on April 30 that he would sabotage the journalists’ rally on May 1. Later, several criminals attacked journalists near the Jamiatul Falah Mosque, injuring at least three.

The CUJ condemned the case, calling it a distortion of facts meant to harass journalists. The union expressed deep concern and demanded a fair and impartial investigation.
