What was meant to be a joyful return home after Eid turned into an unimaginable tragedy on the highway. In a devastating road accident in Cumilla’s Burichang উপজেলার, five people—including four members of the same family—lost their lives, leaving behind a heartbreaking story of loss and survival.
The accident occurred on Thursday (March 26) around 6:00 PM on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway in the Kalakachua area. A private car was crushed after being hit by a speeding bus, instantly turning it into a mangled wreck.
Miraculously, 12-year-old Abrar survived—but his survival came at a cost too painful to bear. Initially unaware of the tragedy, he was told in the hospital that his family members were also receiving treatment. However, later that night, when relatives went to the Moynamoti Highway Police Station to collect the bodies, the truth emerged. Since then, Abrar has fallen completely silent—unable to process the loss of his entire immediate family.
The deceased have been identified as Abrar’s father Mufti Abdul Momin (52), mother Dil Afroze Akter (45), sister Labiba (21), and younger brother Arshad (6). The driver of the private car, Jamal Hossain (50), was also killed on the spot.
According to family sources, they were returning to Dhaka after spending the Eid holidays at their maternal relatives’ home in Chandraganj, Lakshmipur. The fatal crash occurred while they were on their way back to their residence in Mohammadpur, Dhaka.
Another family member, Huzaifa (25), survived simply because he stayed behind at the relatives’ home. While he escaped death, he now faces the devastating reality of losing his entire family.
The victims hailed from Chatarpaiya village in Sonaimuri upazila of Noakhali. Abrar’s father was a respected Mufti at a madrasa in Mohammadpur, Dhaka.
Highway police reported that the private car had just left a roadside hotel after a short break and was re-entering the highway when a Chattogram-bound bus crashed into it at high speed. The impact was so severe that five lives were lost instantly.
Abrar’s maternal uncle, Maulana Faisal Ahmed, blamed reckless driving by the bus driver for the tragedy and demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
Officer-in-Charge Abdul Momin of Moynamoti Highway Police Station said the accident scene was so horrific that they initially feared no one had survived. “Abrar’s survival is nothing short of miraculous,” he said, adding that the bodies have been handed over to the families after legal procedures. The bus has been seized, but the driver and his assistant fled the scene. Efforts are underway to arrest them.
