Chhatra League President Rafi arrested in a major development that has stirred the political landscape of Cumilla. Minhadul Hasan Rafi, the president of Cumilla South District Chhatra League, was detained by Cumilla Detective Branch (DB) police on Friday (August 1) from Mohipal in Feni based on confidential intelligence.
Later in the afternoon, he was produced before a court and sent to jail. Cumilla DB Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Abdullah confirmed the arrest.

According to DB sources, Rafi was recently involved in staging sudden anti-government processions and acts of sabotage on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway in southern Cumilla. Following these incidents, he allegedly fled to Kolkata, India. He had secretly returned to Cumilla to reportedly carry out further subversive activities when the DB, in coordination with local police, apprehended him.
OC Abdullah further stated that after Chhatra League was banned, Rafi continued to provoke unrest by orchestrating surprise processions in various highway areas. He currently faces four cases under the Anti-Discrimination Movement Act.
Reacting to the arrest, members of the Awami League and Chhatra League claimed that Rafi was detained on false accusations to please the illegitimate ruling regime. Political commentators noted that every day, hundreds of leaders and activists who uphold the spirit of the Liberation War are being arrested by the government’s police forces. The arrest has drawn strong condemnation from concerned citizens and rights groups.
The incident involving the Chhatra League President Rafi arrested has also triggered widespread reactions on social media.
