A local leader of a student organisation linked to the National Citizen Party (NCP) has been sent to jail in eastern Bangladesh over allegations of assaulting a woman, police said on Sunday.
The accused, Mehedi Hasan Tanzim, was denied bail by a judicial magistrate court in Cumilla and ordered into custody after being presented before the court earlier in the day. He had been arrested during a late-night police operation on Saturday.
Police said the incident took place in Debidwar উপজেলার Fatehabad area, where the victim lived with her husband, a CNG auto-rickshaw driver, as tenants in the house of the accused. Investigators allege that Tanzim assaulted the woman after finding her alone at home on Saturday evening.
Local residents intervened after learning of the incident, rescuing the woman and detaining the suspect. However, witnesses alleged that several স্থানীয় রাজনৈতিক কর্মী later arrived at the scene and forcibly removed him despite objections from the এলাকাবাসী.
Following a formal complaint filed by the victim, police carried out a raid in the Bhinglabari area and arrested the suspect from his residence, কর্মকর্তারা said.
Officer-in-Charge Moniruzzaman of Debidwar Police Station confirmed the arrest, stating that the accused was produced before the court, which subsequently ordered his detention in jail pending further proceedings.
Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about the case, which remains under investigation.
